The source code for Ubuntu CE is made available from the official Ubuntu source archive. There are also a few packages that are specific to Ubuntu CE (i.e. Dansguardian GUI) that are not available from the official Ubuntu source archive. The source for these packages is provided in each iso download.

Ubuntu CE is 99% Open Source. There are a few packages that are proprietary. These are limited to a few themes, artwork, and programs which are all added with the consent of the Copyright holders.

Web Filtering Tips

Ubuntu Christian Edition comes with web content filtering by Dansguardian which is a very powerful tool. We have also locked down the proxy settings to make the filtering that much more difficult to bypass. However, there is no substitute for the watchful eye of a parent. No filtering system is perfect and many of our children have the technical ability to circumvent our attempts to protect them from the bad side of the internet. We have prepared a few tips to help you better protect your family.

Create seperate user accounts for each child. They should never have root access.

Do not set your CDROM to boot. This will allow a child to use another LiveCD to go around the filter.

Set a BIOS password.

Q: Is Ubuntu Christian Edition officially supported by Canonical?

A: No, it is not "officially" supported. Our project is not funded by Canonical. However, we have contacted them regarding our project and they have given us guidelines to follow and have thanked us for supporting the Ubuntu Community and introducing Ubuntu to the Christian Community.

Q: Is Ubuntu Christian Edition a new distribution of Ubuntu or a derivative?

A: Well it is really neither. Ubuntu Christian Edition is based directly from the standard Ubuntu distribution and contains extra Christian software as well as a few additional tools to make the transition to Ubuntu easier for a Linux newcomer. The graphical changes are minor and are only intended to tailor the project to Christians.

Q: Why should I use the Ubuntu Christian Edition if I can install the same software to the default Ubuntu?

A: The concept behind the Ubuntu Christian Edition is not to deviate from the Ubuntu community. It is intended to draw a larger Christian base to the already thriving community of Ubuntu users. The Ubuntu Christian Edition simply makes it easier for Christians who are new to Linux to see the power of Ubuntu combined with the added benefit of having the best available Linux Christian software pre-installed.

Q: Is Ubuntu Christian Edition designed for Protestants or Catholics?

A: Both! Ubuntu Christian Edition will always try to cater to the needs of all Christians. Ubuntu CE is also a great choice for anyone wanting a family friendly operating system complete with web content filtering.

Ubuntu Christian Edition is easy to download. You can download the CD image and burn it yourself using a CD writer. You can download the ISO file directly from the download site of your choice. The download of a single ISO CD image is around 700MB. Here are instructions on how to burn the ISO to a blank disc. We also have a torrent download, metalink download, and LivePC download available as well a script that will convert your default Ubuntu to Ubuntu CE or update your current Ubuntu CE installation to the latest version.
